Trash Diving in the neighborhood

Are you embarrassed to trash dive in your neighborhood? I was walking Ally yesterday morning and happened upon a cute little kid's kitchen. Now, my kid's DO NOT need a kitchen, but it pained me to think this was going to sit in a landfill somewhere...wasting away. It's totally un-necessary waste. It is missing the faucet and the sink, but that's an easy fix!

So, Ally and I quickly walked home. I couldn't get home fast enough. I was trying to beat the trash pick up and any other person who might try to score what I spotted first. I grabbed my keys and drove back slyly...making sure there were no other cars coming down the street. Then quickly got out, opened the back and tossed it gently in the truck. I did get snagged by a neighbor soccer mom driving a mini van. I've been to other neighborhoods and totally picked up furniture and not been embarrassed one bit! What is it about trash diving in your own community? Oh well, I did it. I scored and some other kid will benefit from me picking it up!

  7. I stopped yesterday to pick up a wooden tray that one of our neighbors was throwing out. A passing car thought I was stopping to talk, so he stopped too - eek! One day my son and I were out for a jog and found the perfect curatin rods for our basement - I ran the 1/2 mile back home carrying them under my arm. I'm kind of getting past the shame, but he was mortified! Way to go on your kitchen find!!

  12. There is a high chair... a HIGH CHAIR y'all, just sitting on the side of the highway that I have been wanting to stop and pick up for days. All it needs is for me to sew a new fabric seat for it and hose it down. I'd so dumpster dive in my neighborhood lol. That is a great find!

  14. Love this!! I did the same thing a couple of weeks ago from my neighbors which I thought had moved (they were gone a week). Well, the husband came back one afternoon to do some final cleaning on the house and my husband was out in the yard and the neighbor came over. Since my husband didn't know what I had done he proceeds to open the garage door and show the neighbor something and low and behold their sits the chair I rescued from their curb. My 5 year old eventually told my husband what we had done and he says, "well that would explain the look on the neighbors face when I opened the garage door." Oh, the things we do for the thrill of a bargin!

  15. I once was in a dumpster with my neighbor Allison. The sanitation truck actually came to pick up the dumpster while we were both in it - picking up great old discarded antiques. We both popped up and the guy said "look what we have here... a couple of dumpster Divas" it was totally worth the embarrassment. LOVE the kitchen, Lori

  16. I think that's fabulous! When my husband and I first got married we were moving into our apartment and my husband saw this cool chair that was only partially upholstered and was missing a leg. He found the leg a few yards away and being that we owned hardly any furniture he grabbed it and brought in the house and threw a quilt over it. We still have that chair after thirty six years of marriage and I have had it recovered at least four times since then. That was my best dumpster dive find.

  17. Too funny! I have done that soo many times:)

Do you have an idea of where the cool kitchen will find home? I got really excited about it going to a Domestic Violence Shelter and all the little girls and boys who will remember how they had a cool toy kitchen:)

  25. I took some patio furniture right off my neighbor's curb- seriously right across the street! I didn't think anyone had seen me, but just in case, I told my neighbor about it the next time I saw her. How's that for shameless! She got a kick out of it, said she had never been able to find cushions to make the chairs comfortable (we did!) and then she gave me the table that went with the set! It was awesome! Dumpster Divas Unite!!! (I woulda picked up that kitchen too!)
